A used burner can look tempting at a fraction of a new burner's cost — but it comes with risks that aren't always visible. The 10 points below are the core questions worth asking before making a purchase decision.
1. Total operating hours and age
Age alone isn't sufficient information; total operating hours (from a run-hour meter record, if available) is a more meaningful indicator. As covered in our repair-or-replace guide, a consistently maintained burner can run 15-20 years — but that figure means nothing if the maintenance history is unknown.
2. Maintenance and fault history records
Ask the seller for written maintenance records. If none exist, the safer approach is to treat the burner as unmaintained and price accordingly.
3. Are the brand and model still in production?
On a discontinued model, factor in the possibility that spare parts lead time could stretch out on a future part failure.
4. Has the safety chain been function-tested?
Visual inspection isn't enough. The safety time verification, flame signal measurement and air pressure switch test covered in our commissioning guide must be carried out on a used burner before purchase.
5. Is there CE marking and a declaration of conformity?
As covered in our EN 676/267 guide, the technical nameplate and the manufacturer's declaration of conformity show which standard the burner complies with. Without these documents, compliance can't be confirmed.
6. Does the capacity/back pressure match the boiler you'll fit it to?
As covered in our burner selection guide, capacity and back pressure compatibility must be confirmed before fitting a used burner to your existing boiler — "it worked at the old site" isn't a sufficient guarantee.
7. Motor and fan condition
Check the motor and fan's running noise, vibration and power draw — see our vibration and noise guide.
8. Combustion head, nozzle and electrode wear
Visible wear on these components indicates both a near-term parts replacement need and how heavily the burner has been used.
9. Corrosion and physical damage
Check the housing, flange connection and electrical box visually for corrosion or cracks.
10. Is there a seller warranty?
Manufacturer warranty usually doesn't apply to used equipment, but some sellers offer a short warranty of their own. Confirm what it covers and how long it lasts.
