Why delayed ignition is a particularly serious symptom
In the burner ignition sequence, once the safety valves open, the flame is expected to establish within the safety time (typically 2–3 seconds). If ignition is delayed within that window, the fuel–air mixture that has accumulated in the combustion chamber ignites instantaneously and forcefully once it does catch — this is the source of the bang or thud you hear.
A single, mild instance of delayed ignition can sometimes be down to a minor setting drift. But a bang that repeats at every firing should be taken seriously — it indicates the electrode setting is out of spec, ignition is genuinely delayed, or the fuel–air ratio at ignition is wrong, and it can damage equipment over time.
Mechanical causes
- Bearing wear: motor bearings wear over time; a continuous high-pitched sound is usually the first sign. Left unaddressed, it can progress to motor failure.
- Fan impeller imbalance: dust or dirt built up on the impeller unbalances the rotation and causes vibration — which also affects combustion air volume.
- Loose mounting: loose bolts on the burner-to-boiler mounting flange, or a worn vibration isolator, can produce a vibration felt through the whole housing.
